Simplicef

Simplicef, or cefpodoxime proxetil, is a semi-synthetic cephalosporin veterinary antibiotic used in dogs. It is administered orally and comes in both 100 mg and 200 mg tablets.

What is it used for?

It is typically used in dogs to treat wounds, abscesses, and other skin infections. It is effective for infections that are caused by strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus canis, Staphylococcus intermedius, Proteus mirabilis, Pasteurella multocida, and E. coli.

Dosage and Administration

One of the great things about using Simplicef is that it has a long half-life, meaning it is only given once daily. This makes things much easier for the pet owner, since they will only have to remember one dose time each day instead of two or more. It can also be given with or without food, so there is no need to try to coordinate dosing with feeding time.

The recommended dosage for dogs is 2.3 to 4.5 mg per pound (or 5 to 10 mg per kg). It is given once every 24 hours for 5 to 7 days or for 2 to 3 days after signs or symptoms have subsided. If there is no response to treatment after 3 or 4 days, treatment should be discontinued and a veterinarian should be consulted. The maximum duration of treatment should be no longer than 28 days.
